Zoom Burst

I managed to get this shot by taking a photo of my television whilst zooming mid exposure.  I was really surprised how good this image was for one my 3rd/4th attempt at it!

To recreate this all you need to do is zoom the lens of your SLR during the exposure, this will create a sense of movement, creating an ‘explosion’ effect with streaks of light bursting out of the centre of the frame.

This was taken with ISO 200, f/14.0 and 0.4sec shutter speed.  So nothing fancy was required in the way of lens.

Castle Combe Circuit

On Friday, myself and Kris decided to take a day off work and go and visit Castle Combe Circuit to photograph some motorsport as there was an open track day going on.  You never really know what to expect on these days as cars can range from a Rover 45 (standard spec!) to a Dodge Viper to a VW Golf MK I with a VR6 engine to superlight Lotus Exiges.

Seeing the Ariel Atom was really quite special as there are not many of them about and the supercharged Exiges sounded fantastic and they destroyed nearly every other car out there with it’s brutal cornering ability!  Best moment of the day was probably watching the blue BMW M3 (pictured above) losing it big time right in front of us in The Esses, thankfully it appeared to only be his pride that was damaged.  You can find all of my photos from the day out at Castle Combe Circuit on either my photos section of the site or on Flickr if you prefer.

Kennall Vale

Decided to go to the Kennall Vale nature reserve today with Nik and Georgia, never been there before but my mate Phil told me about it and I am so glad he did.  It was raining quite heavily (typical Cornish weekend!) but that did not deter us, here are a few photos.

My Nikon D90

Well I have finally decided to spend some of my hard earned cash and buy my own Digital SLR, for months now I have borrowed Nikki’s camera when I could.  The choice was quite hard really as my mate Kris has a Canon EOS 400D and was doing his best to persuade me to go the Canon brand but ultimately I had to go Nikon as Nik already has a Nikon D40x with a number of lenses so it would mean less doubling up on certain lenses.

I went for the Nikon D90 body only and purchased a Nikon AF-S DX VR Zoom 55-200mm f/4-5.6G and a Nikon AF 50mm f/1.8D.

So far I am really impressed with the ease of use and dramatic images the D90 is producing and it will only get better as I improve.
